Running Pace Calculator FAQ

How do you calculate running pace?
Pace = time ÷ distance. Example: run 10 km in 50 minutes → pace = 50/10 = 5:00 min/km. Example: 5K in 25 minutes → 5:00 min/km = 12 km/h. In miles: run 5 miles in 40 minutes → pace = 40/5 = 8:00 min/mile = 7.5 mph. The calculator finds any of the three (pace, distance, time) from the other two.

How do you convert min/km to km/h and mph?
km/h = 60 ÷ pace(min/km). Example: 5:00 min/km → km/h = 60/5 = 12 km/h. 4:30 min/km → 60/4.5 = 13.33 km/h = 8.28 mph. mph = km/h ÷ 1.60934. Common reference: 6:00 min/km = 10 km/h = 6.21 mph; 5:00 min/km = 12 km/h = 7.46 mph; 4:00 min/km = 15 km/h = 9.32 mph.

How do you calculate a half marathon finish time from pace?
Finish time = pace × distance. Half marathon = 21.0975 km. At 5:00 min/km: time = 5 × 21.0975 = 105.5 min = 1:45:29. At 6:00 min/km: 6 × 21.0975 = 126.6 min = 2:06:34. Marathon (42.195 km) at 5:00 min/km = 3:30:58. Enter your target time and the calculator finds the required pace automatically.

What pace do I need to run a sub-2-hour half marathon?
For a 2:00:00 half marathon (21.0975 km): pace = 120 min ÷ 21.0975 km = 5:41 min/km = 9:09 min/mile. For sub-1:45:00: pace needed = 4:58 min/km = 7:59 min/mile. For sub-2-hour marathon (42.195 km): pace = 120 ÷ 42.195 = 2:50 min/km = 4:34 min/mile — just for reference.

What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace = time per unit distance (min/km or min/mile). Speed = distance per unit time (km/h or mph). They are reciprocals. A faster runner has a lower pace (fewer minutes per km) but higher speed (more km per hour). Runners train by pace; treadmills and GPS watches often display speed. 5:00 min/km = 12 km/h; 8:00 min/mile = 7.5 mph.

How do you convert between min/km and min/mile pace?
Multiply min/km by 1.60934 to get min/mile. Divide min/mile by 1.60934 to get min/km. Example: 5:00 min/km = 5 × 1.60934 = 8:03 min/mile. Example: 7:30 min/mile = 7.5 / 1.60934 = 4:40 min/km. Key reference: 6:00 min/mile = 3:44 min/km (fast club runner pace).

What are typical running paces for different race distances?
Approximate elite → average recreational paces: 5K: elite ~2:40 min/km → recreational 5:30–7:00. 10K: elite ~2:45 → recreational 5:45–7:30. Half marathon: elite ~2:55 → recreational 6:00–8:00. Marathon: elite ~3:00 → recreational 6:30–9:00. For most recreational runners, 5:00–6:30 min/km is a competitive but achievable 10K pace.

How do negative splits work in race pacing?
A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first. It is widely considered the optimal race strategy because it avoids early burnout. For a 10K target of 50 minutes at 5:00 min/km average, a negative split might be first 5K in 25:30 (5:06 pace) and second 5K in 24:30 (4:54 pace). Calculate your target splits by multiplying your goal pace by each distance segment.
