Fuel Cost Calculator FAQ
What is a fuel cost calculator?
A fuel cost calculator estimates total trip fuel cost from distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price. It is useful for road trips, commuting, mileage planning, reimbursement estimates, and comparing driving costs.
What is a fuel calculator?
A fuel calculator is a broader tool that can estimate fuel used, trip cost, and fuel economy relationships. This page works as a fuel cost calculator, gas cost calculator, and fuel consumption calculator depending on which value you want to solve.
How do you calculate fuel cost for a trip?
A common formula is Fuel used = Distance / Efficiency and Fuel cost = Fuel used × Fuel price. If your car uses L/100 km, fuel used is calculated as Distance × Consumption / 100. This calculator handles the unit conversion automatically before estimating total trip cost.
Can I use this as a gas cost calculator for a road trip?
Yes. Enter the trip distance, your fuel efficiency in mpg, km/L, or L/100 km, and the fuel price. The calculator then estimates one-way or round-trip road trip fuel cost and fuel used.
Can I calculate one-way and round-trip fuel cost?
Yes. Use the round-trip option to include the return journey. The calculator then shows both one-way cost and round-trip fuel and cost estimates.
Can this calculator show cost per mile or cost per km?
Yes. In addition to total trip cost, the calculator shows cost per distance unit and cost per 100 km, which is useful for comparing routes, reimbursements, and vehicle running costs.
What fuel economy units does this calculator support?
It supports common fuel-consumption and fuel-economy units such as L/100 km, km/L, and mpg. If needed, you can also use the dedicated fuel unit converter linked below the calculator.
Can I use this fuel calculator by mpg?
Yes. Select an mpg unit in the fuel-efficiency dropdown, enter your mileage value and fuel price, and the calculator will estimate fuel used and total gas cost for the trip.
Is lower or higher fuel consumption better?
It depends on the unit. With L/100 km, lower is better because the car uses less fuel over the same distance. With mpg and km/L, higher is better because the car travels farther on the same amount of fuel.
Can I use current fuel prices?
Yes. On supported country versions, the calculator shows average fuel prices and lets you quickly apply current gasoline, diesel, or LPG prices to the fuel price field.
What else can I do with this fuel calculator?
Besides total journey cost, the tool also shows fuel used, round-trip totals, cost per distance unit, and cost per 100 km. You can also export the setup and results to CSV for reporting or trip planning.
Is this a fuel consumption calculator or a fuel cost calculator?
It works as both. You can calculate fuel consumption from distance and fuel used, or calculate fuel cost from distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price.
Example
Suppose a road trip distance is 450 km, the average fuel consumption is 6.5 L/100 km, and the fuel price is 1.70 per liter.
\[ \text{Fuel used} = 450 \times \frac{6.5}{100} = 29.25 \text{ L} \] \[ \text{Fuel cost} = 29.25 \times 1.70 = 49.73 \]
A miles-and-mpg example works the same way. Suppose a trip is 300 miles, fuel economy is 32 mpg, and gas price is 3.60 per gallon.
\[ \text{Fuel used} = \frac{300}{32} = 9.375 \text{ gal} \] \[ \text{Fuel cost} = 9.375 \times 3.60 = 33.75 \]
If you enable round trip, both the fuel used and trip cost are doubled.
