» Sales Taxes in the USA

US sales tax calculator to add or remove sales tax, split pre-tax and after-tax price, and estimate checkout totals for shopping, invoices, and pricing.

Use this US sales tax calculator to add sales tax to a price or remove tax from a total amount. In the United States, there is no federal sales tax; rates are set by states and, in many places, by city, county, or district taxes. Enter the state rate and add any local rate that applies to estimate the total sales tax rate, tax amount, and final price. Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — do not levy a statewide sales tax, though local taxes may still apply in some places.

Sales tax formula

$$\begin{aligned} \mathrm{Gross} &= \mathrm{Net}\times(1+r) \\ \mathrm{Net} &= \frac{\mathrm{Gross}}{1+r} \\ \mathrm{Tax} &= \mathrm{Net}\times r \end{aligned}$$

Estimate only. US sales tax can depend on the exact address, local jurisdiction, product or service, exemptions, and rate changes. Default values are state-level rates and may be incomplete or out of date. Do not use this calculator as tax, legal, accounting, filing, or business decision advice; verify the correct rate with the relevant state or local tax authority.

Sourcing note: The actual tax may depend on the seller location, buyer location, district rules, or a mixed origin/destination sourcing rule. A single state plus local rate may not match the correct transaction rate.

US Sales Tax Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate US sales tax?
To add sales tax, use tax = pre-tax price × total tax rate and total price = pre-tax price × (1 + total tax rate). In this calculator, the total rate is the state rate plus any local city, county, or district rate you enter.

How do I remove US sales tax from a total price?
Enter the price after tax and the calculator divides it by (1 + total tax rate) to estimate the pre-tax price. The tax amount is the difference between the after-tax total and the estimated pre-tax price.

Why does the calculator have a local tax field?
US sales tax is often not just a state rate. Cities, counties, districts, and special local jurisdictions may add tax. Use the local tax field when you know the extra local rate that applies to the transaction.

Are the default state sales tax rates enough?
No. Default values are state-level estimates only. The actual tax can depend on the exact address, local jurisdiction, product or service, exemptions, rate caps, sourcing rules, and current law.

Why is Hawaii different from a normal sales tax state?
Hawaii uses General Excise Tax (GET) rather than a traditional retail sales tax. GET is imposed on businesses and may be passed on to customers. County surcharge and maximum pass-on rules may apply.

What are gross receipts taxes such as New Mexico GRT and Arizona TPT?
Gross receipts style taxes are generally imposed on the seller or business activity instead of being a simple traditional sales tax on the buyer. New Mexico uses Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) and Arizona uses Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT), so the visible customer charge may not behave like a standard sales tax.

Why can California, Texas, and Arizona be harder to estimate?
Some states use mixed sourcing rules, where the applicable tax can depend on seller location, buyer location, district rules, or a combination of origin and destination rules. A simple state-plus-local percentage may not match the correct transaction rate.

Can local tax be capped for large purchases?
Yes. In some states, including Tennessee and Florida, local tax may be capped or limited for certain higher-value purchases. A flat percentage estimate may overstate the tax on those transactions.

Can I use this calculator for tax filing or business decisions?
No. This calculator is for quick estimates only. Do not use it as tax, legal, accounting, filing, or business decision advice. Verify the correct rate and tax treatment with the relevant state or local tax authority.
